Batman Mola

Characters from comic books are always a favorite among the Kuna mola-makers, particularly those of the Island of Carti where this one was made. It is Batman riding on a flying cat. The letters "MRPM" are on a smaller bat to the left of the central figure. MRPM can refer to Mr. P.M. (night) or they might refer to someones initials. ( I lean towards the Mr. P.M.)

"Tas-Tas" background. Some embroidery details. Three full layers of fabric.

Dimensions: 17"x 13"

Love Birds

This is a very detailed mola that shows two lovebirds that seem to be embracing. They look like a pair of quails. the mola is nicely made using the reverse applique technique. Their bodies have little triangles in orange and maroon. Their faces have nice embroidery and for the background the mola maker chose elements resembling "greek keys".

The mola is about 7 years old. It is in excellent condition: the colors are nice and bright, no rips or stains or torn edges. The Kuna woman that made it wore it on her blouse.

Dimensions: 18-1/2" x 14-1/2"

(the scan is crooked, the mola is not)

(Please forgive the terrible scans)

Animals Mola Pair

This pair of molas is also from the mid 1980's.

The top mola shows domestic animals: a cat and a dog while the bottom mola portrays animals that are frequently encountered in the San Blas (Kuna Yala) forests or lowlands. One is a little tiger, the other resembles a boar although it might be a "yannu" or pecari.

In either case the molas are very nicely and neatly made, with neat and even stitches. They were worn on the blouse of the Kuna woman that made them and are soft from the wear and the washings. No rips or stains.

Dimensions: 17-1/2" x 14"

Puppy Dogs on Gloves(?) Mola

This is a very pretty and unusual mola that portrays two well dressed cute little puppy dogs. The mola maker has added a lot of nice details. The faces and hats of the puppies embroidery stitches. For a background the mola maker has used vertical cuts, known as "tas-tas". It even looks as if these two puppies were on top of a pair of gloves. Whatever, this lovely mola will surely bring a smile to your face. It would also look beautiful framed in a young child's room.

Dimensions: 15" x 12-1/2"

Fancy Shore Birds Mola

Just about anything can be a source of inspiration for a Kuna woman's mola. This time it was the birds that they so often see walking along the beaches of the Caribbean on the various islands of Kuna Yala. This traditional design has been adapted from a motif of the mid sixties to early seventies.

The mola has thin multi-colored strips of fabric between the main layers resulting in a very nice detail.

Dimensions: 16-1/4" x 12-1/2"

Atchu Mor

This is a nice little dragon, very popular in Kuna mythology. It is nicely made and very colorful. Hand stitched using the reverse applique technique with 3 full layers of fabric: maroon, white and black. Many other colors in between. For the background the mola maker has used the vertical cut

Dimensions: 15-1/4" x 11-3/4"

Swimming Fish (Dolphin?) Mola

This lovely fish seems to be swimming in a geometric maze! I'm not sure what fish it is, the mola maker said it was a dolphin but I don't think so! The fish has nice applications in a variety of colors and some embroidery details on its face. The background is a pistachio green geometric triangular design. It is well done, the stitches are neat and even. Better than what appears on the image -

The mola was once worn on a blouse and is approximately 8 - 10 years old. Overall very good condition.

This one would great framed. It's a real bargain!!!!

Dimensions: 16-1/4" x 13-1/4"

Chalices Mola

Beautiful Religious mola that shows two chalices with a cross and the grapes from which the wine will be made. For a background filler the mola maker has used a geometric design in many colors. The detail on the chalices is the "bua bua" or small cut out squares. The top layer is black and the bottom layer is a synthetic brown fabric. This mola would make lovely stole for a priest or minister.

Dimensions: 17-1/4" x `13-1/2"

Ladies & Birds in Trees

This is a very interesting mola of four well dressed ladies. Each one is holding a bird in her hands. They are sitting on what looks like a very intricate tree adorned with bells. The colors on this one are a black top and a bright pink (not purple) bottom layer. Lots of other colors are between the two principal pieces of fabric. "Tas-Tas" (vertical cut outs) were used for the background.

Dimensions: 18" x 13-1/4"

Geometric Mola - Mountain Spirit Adaptation

This is one of the sergan (ancestral) mola designs that has been "adapted" by the mola maker. It is nicely made from 3 layers of cotton fabric. The vertical cut outs in the background have a "double and in some cases triple cut so that the maroon layer shows through.

Dimensions: 17" x 13-1/4"

First Christmas - Geometric Mola

This is a very pretty mola that portrays Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus in the midst of a beautiful geometric design. Mary seems to be wearing a Kuna head scarf!.
