Life and Death Mola Pair
LIFE
KUNA MOTHER AND BABY
This mola is one of a pair that portrays Kuna Village customs. Here we have a Kuna mother with her baby. She is fully outfitted in her Kuna clothing, complete with the beaded bands on her arms and legs. The embroidery detail of the blouse is exceptional. The Kuna woman's hair is embroidered, as is the skirt, the head scarf and the hammock. She is rocking and probably singing to the baby in the hammock. Hammocks are a integral part of the Kuna culture. Babies are rocked to sleep in them, the Sailas or tribe leaders lay in them during their ceremonies, the sick are cured in them, the dead are mourned and then carried away in them for burial. The dwelling here represents a Kuna house or hut. The roof is thatched with palm tree fronds. This is represented by different colored swatches of fabric between the main fabric layers and hand stitched in the reverse applique. The vertical cut-outs in many other colors represent the "caña brava" or a bamboo type of sugar cane walls. Wonderful and elaborate embroidery throughout the mola. The background is filled with tiny colored triangles. This was made to be worn on a blouse but was not ever used. Brand New - Mint condition. Size: 18" x 14". Colors: Top layer Maroon, Middle layer Black and Bottom layer Maroon. Mola Maker = Martina of Ustupu |
